What is Linguee?

Linguee is a unique translation tool combining an editorial dictionary and a search engine with which you can search billions of bilingual texts for words and expressions.

The Linguee search results are divided into several sections. In the top section you are shown results from our reliable editorial dictionary. Professional editors are working continuously on adding new entries and enhancing the quality of the dictionary. This provides you with a quick overview of various translations of your search term. Below you are shown example sentences from other sources to give you an idea of how your search term has been translated in context.

Compared to traditional online dictionaries, Linguee contains about 1,000 times more translated texts, which are displayed in full sentences. Linguee shows translations for expressions such as "strong evidence," "strong relationship," or "strong opinion," and even for rare expressions or specific technical terms.

What are the benefits?

Linguee offers numerous benefits compared to other online dictionaries:
  • Extremely fast search: translations are shown as you type
  • Approximately 1,000 times more translated texts
  • Editorial dictionary, reviewed and approved by the Linguee editors
  • Single word translations displayed in a clear, user-friendly structure
  • Great variety of contextual translation examples
  • Most common translations printed in boldface
  • Source website shown for all example sentences

How do I use Linguee?

You can use Linguee as a dictionary or as an internet search engine. Just search for a word or expression. In the top section, you see dictionary entries arranged in a clear, easy-to-read manner, and you find example sentences that contain your search word or phrase as an exact or similar match below. In general, it may pay off to search for several words at once, e.g. "in his role as" instead of just entering "role." This way, you will be able to find more examples of a contextual translation
